A lot of freelance designers have been struggling to keep their heads above water during these tough economic times. I’ve found a solution to my lack of business coming from those channels; contracting out via a “talent agency.” I just finished a two and half month stint at NPR.org working on their redesign doing production work. It was a nice experience and something I may keep in mind in the future, even when the economy turns itself around…whenever that may be.
Now that the great NPR experience has ended, Monday I head off to PBS to work on their site redesign as a front-end developer. For the next six months I’ll have regular income coming in, I’ll have a hand in redesigning an organization’s site that is going to look really good on my resume and I’ll only have to commute an hour and fifteen minutes each way to get there.
The upside is that there are two Ethiopian restaurants within walking distance of their offices, I’ll be working in the state of Virginia again and most of the staff heading up the redesign at PBS used to work for AOL. I have a feeling I’ll be learning a lot at this gig.
