This post is way off-topic and I mean way off-topic. I’ve recently become addicted to the British television drama “Bad Girls.” I had seen series 1 that had been released in the US but none of the other series were released (as of yet) in the States. So I remedied that problem—I purchased a hacked DVD player that will play all regions and encodings, then visited Amazon.co.uk and purchased series 2 & 3. I’ve lost lots of sleep since buying the DVDs and all I have to say is I wish we could getting away with calling something a “Twatting Twat!” in the United States.
The Cultural Divide
Many people in the States see ourselves as more advanced than other countries. I tend to differ in that opinion, especially when it comes to language and nudity. Often here in the US Brit’s are seen as shy, reserved folk that are more “proper” than we are. I’ve since learned while watching this drama that couldn’t be further from the truth. I appreciate the knowledge that the Brit’s know saying “bullshit” or “shit” on television isn’t going to warp minds or showing two women kissing isn’t something that warrants a virtual warning sticker before the program. So hats off to my Brit friends for being much more advanced than us Americans.
P.S—Am I to really believe that it’s okay to pull a bottle of Scotch out of your work desk at the end of the day and it be no big deal?
I would love to get hold of the Bad Girls DVD here in canada. A local station ran a few series a couple of years ago. I was hooked. Then they abruptly ended it. Just like that. What a great series it was.
Speaking of gritty with no gloss, one of my favorite movies that I’ve seen in recent years is Gangster No. 1, which is British-made. Of course, it’s a lot easier to get hold of Brit movies than it is television series.
Well it’s definitely good that you’re getting into British TV Jen :), there’s some great stuff out there. I really haven’t ever watched bad girls, so I wouldn’t be able to rate it, but you should definitely watch some of the comedies like Blackadder and Father Ted. Oh, and the movies - A lot of British movie-making is great too, especially if you like gritty stuff with no gloss.
Andrew: It’s amazing the attitude toward drink as well then… a bottle of Scotch in the desk at most places I’ve worked would be enough to get you sacked.
I’ve never had a bottle of scotch in my desk, and most people drive to work so wouldn’t; however, I can’t see it being a major problem at the end of the working day.
I reckon most people would just head for the pub though.
