Jerry Falwell Doing a Weak Saturday Night Fever ImpressionThis post is really off the beaten blog-path but I just wanted to share my “sadness” at the passing of the Religious Right’s mouthpiece. To help us all mourn his loss below are some quotes from the great man himself.
Apparently 9/11 happened because people just didn’t have enough faith:
“I put all the blame legally and morally on the actions of the terrorist, [but America’s] secular and anti-Christian environment left us open to our Lord’s [decision] not to protect. When a nation deserts God and expels God from the culture… the result is not good.”
Even America’s public schools felt his wrath:
“I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won’t have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!”
Those damn gays and their supporters:
“AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.”
Oh but wait, he hated equally, here’s one for the women in the house:
“It appears that America’s anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men’s movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening.”
He hated science too:
“The Bible is the inerrant … word of the living God. It is absolutely infallible, without error in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as well as in areas such as geography, science, history, etc.”
Can’t forget to insult the liberals and the Jews:
“The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews.”
I know I shouldn’t bang on about religion on a design blog but I was raised by a Christian mother, Baptist to be exact, and though I don’t subscribe to those beliefs myself, she taught me that spirituality comes from a place of love, not fear and hatred. I suppose Mr. Falwell would have condemned her as well for not being “Christian enough.” At least now that he’s passed we won’t have to hear some of the inane comments that he would spew from his pulpit.
May God forgive him his indiscretions and let him rest in peace. RIP Mr. Falwell.
Well said, Jen.
Only kidding
Not that they “do” think like that.
I go to public school, and no one thinks like that, and I don’t mean to be rude to your religious views…
fuck em
I’ve been avoiding my comments all day, thinking I’d come back to find that I’d been verbally lynched. Glad to see some positive comments.
